Last fall, Michigan voters went to the polls and outlawed race-based affirmative action policies. Birmingham native Peter Schmidt is a deputy editor of the Chronicle of Higher Education. In his new book, Color and Money he argues that the real motivations and effects of college admissions policies are much different than most of us believe.
