Detroit News columnist Daniel Howes recently wrote that organizers of a new effort to revitalize the Detroit area have to struggle against “a kind of pessimistic self-loathing.” Michigan Radio’s Jack Lessenberry spoke with Tom Sugrue about Detroit’s troubles. He is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania who wrote a classic study of the city 10 years ago called “The Origins of the Urban Crisis: Race and Inequality in Postwar Detroit.”
