This week Michigan Radio’s Senior Political Analyst Jack Lessenberry is speaking with those who are for and against this year’s ballot proposals. Today, Jack speaks with Tom George. Mr. George is a Republican state Senator from Michigan’s 20th District. He is against Proposal One, which would legalize the use of medical marijuana in the state. Mr. Lessenberry spoke with him.

I heard with interest your thoughts on legalizing pot. I can fully understand how it can help many people suffering when normal methods of medication do not. My husband had three bouts with cancer and has severe pain and plumbing problems. Five years ago after hundreds of trials with normal medications his doctor recommended tincture of opium. It worked as no other every had. He has to take it regularly to relieve his symptoms. It has been used for centuries. It is a controlled drug of course but it is getting more popular. I used to have to get it at the hospital but now I can get it for him at the local Rite Aid store. I suppose you could take a huge dose and get stoned but you can with overdoses of many drugs. I thought you would want to know that opium is already out there in use... we are grateful for that, too.
